Understanding Alcohol Overconsumption

What you need to know . . .

Excessive alcohol use is a significant concern in Albany County, contributing to preventable deaths, accidents, and social issues. The Coalition to Prevent Suicide and Substance Abuse is committed to raising awareness and implementing preventive measures to address this public health challenge. Here’s what you need to know about alcohol overconsumption in our community.

The Impact of Alcohol Overconsumption

In Albany County, 25.6% of adults report excessive drinking, which is significantly higher than the state average of 17.8%. Excessive drinking includes binge drinking and heavy drinking, both of which contribute to short-term risks like accidents and injuries, and long-term health impacts such as liver disease and cancer.

  • Binge Drinking: Defined as consuming 5 or more drinks for men, or 4 or more drinks for women, on a single occasion.
  • Heavy Drinking: Defined as consuming more than 15 drinks per week for men, or more than 8 drinks per week for women.

Alcohol Outlet Density and Community Risk

Albany County has 80 licensed alcohol outlets, 73% of which are on-premise consumption (bars and restaurants) and 10% off-premise (liquor stores). Research shows that higher alcohol outlet density increases the risk of alcohol misuse, impaired driving, and alcohol-related violence. Communities with dense alcohol outlets often face more public safety challenges.

Key Data:

  • Excessive drinking prevalence: 25.6% of Albany County adults
  • Alcohol outlets per 10,000 residents: 750 per 10,000 residents, one of the highest rates in the state.

Public Health Concerns

Alcohol overconsumption doesn’t only affect individual health; it puts a strain on the community’s resources:

  • Traffic accidents: Alcohol is a major factor in impaired driving incidents. In Albany County, 19.33% of DUI arrests involve drugs, exacerbating the dangers on our roads.
  • Public intoxication: A significant percentage of arrests in the county are for public intoxication, which poses public safety risks and fuels other crimes like domestic violence.
